UVIABJ Host ’26 Journalism Summit

As 2026 spring semester came to an end, students in UVI Association geared up for thought-provoking sessions. Student leaders organized lectures and discussions around the theme, “The Pen is mightier than the Sword.”

UVIABJ maintained a tight deadline, and scheduled two days of guest appearances across STX and STT campuses. Guests included respected public relations specialist, civil rights activist, Marsha Pitts-Phillips of Minneapolis, MN. and DJ CHEEM, the fastest growing soca artist in the Caribbean.

Graduating senior, and team leader Ashawn Taedo Phillips explained that incorporating UVIABJ’s motto was a perfect way to illustrate the state of affairs across the globe. He said, “even this aged-old Latin expression is hundred of years old, the terms ‘pen’ and ‘sword’ represent the controversies that are played out in this day and age.”

Program Coordinator Kalyna Neilsen added, “the ‘pen’ in todays society is representive of social and tradition media. Information, as well as mis-information to the general public.

UVIABJ successfully engaged participation from community on both islands. Anatra Pancham, (publisher STT Source), Bennett (political candidate) Turnbull (radio owner/host) were special guests and joined in lively question/answer converstions with hosts Mitchell Turnbull, Jayden Smith, Kwaniqua, Hunter Simpson,
